Teach the Children
Deuteronomy 6:1-7
Why this title? Because God commanded Israel in Deuteronomy 6 to teach the children about the extraordinary deliverance of this nation from Egyptian bondage.
In Deuteronomy 6:3, the LORD God declared the terms of a better life and wellness for Israel if they kept His commandments, statues and judgments.
Take note that God alone is/was capable of constructing the conditions for people to live their ‘best life” in this world.
In Deuteronomy 6 “living their best lives” meant taking possession of a land flowing with milk and honey — through obedience.
<Key Point> Now here comes the gut punch. Any failure by Israel to teach their children about the commandments and God’s deliverance of Israel meant the certain doom and failure for this nation.
More importantly today, any failure by us to teach our children means whatever got accomplished by us during our lifetime is at risk of collapse and failure.
Today’s outline for the title “Teach the Children” is based around three key ideas as this text is about the commandment, communication and consecration.
1. Commandment
a. Every word of instruction in Deuteronomy 6 hinges on the commandment in verses 1-2.
b. Verses 1-2 state, 1 “Now this is the commandment, and these are the statutes and judgments which the LORD your God has commanded to teach you, that you may observe them in the land which you are crossing over to possess, 2 that you may fear the LORD your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, you and your son and your grandson, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged.
2. Communication
a. This text is about two-tiers of communication. With the first tier of communication coming from God to Israel and the second tier from Israel to their children.
b. There is one word that brings that into sharp focus in verse 4 — “hear.”
4 “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one! 5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
3. Consecration
a. If you are a person who loves God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength then — you are a consecrated person — capable of solemn dedication to the will of God.
6 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.
b. If the words God commands are in your heart then you are a person capable of reaching and teaching the children.
c. One final thought. There may be someone listening to this talk and saying to themselves I have told my children many times they need to come to church.
d. Permit me to read verse 7. “You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.
e. Diligently means repetition. Diligently means regularly. Diligently means don’t get frustrated. Diligently means you are mama and daddy — they are the child.
f. Consecrated folk are diligent folk.
